The world has suffered relentless and extreme climate events in recent years, many of which scientists have directly linked to human-caused climate change. As a result, the whole of mankind is facing more and more dire climate consequences than it has ever confronted in recorded history. The Oregon, California, and Pacific Northwest wildfires and floods, and typhoons in China have vividly illustrated the climate change crises we are facing.
We, the people of the earth, have never been so directly responsible for the future of the planet as individuals and as members of communities, regions, professions, organizations, and nations. No one is untouched, and we all are responsible for working together toward solutions.
The planet climate crisis cannot be resolved without active participation from the United States and China. On September 21, 2021, Chinese President Xi Jinping made the pledge on coal at the United Nations General Assembly that China will stop funding overseas coal projects. China just made its most effective climate move yet!
Through the Climate Crisis and Sustainability Summit, at the Sub-national level, we can make the most of the great possibilities for strategic growth and mutually beneficial outcomes between Oregon and our sister states by emphasizing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development—the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were endorsed in 2015 by 193 member nations of the United Nations including the United States.
With the synergy between Oregon and China, built through decades of friendship, trade, and cooperation with China through our sister state relations, now is the time to act by establishing positive, mutually beneficial agreements and programs between our states.
